Re-Roll your Duct Tape

Thu Jul 26 2007
Everyone knows how well Duck Tape (Duck Tape, 100 MPH tape, etc) works for so many tasks. Because it is so useful it's a great item for a survival kit, first aid kit or a 72 hour bag. The usual roll of duct tape is on a large diameter paper roll, this is too large for most kits, so re-roll the tape onto a smaller roll to save space. Here is a step by step on how to do this. It is easy and won't take very long to do it either.

Here is a step by step on how to do this. It is easy and won't take very long to do it either.

Start with a way to hold the roll of duct tape. I used this tape dispenser, but a stick or hammer handle would work too. I used sardine can keys, and a cordless drill

I used the sardine can keys because they have the 'loop' at one end so I'll be able to tie a loop of 550 cord to the small roll of tape or clip it to a carabineer to help secure it to my gear. I wrapped the tape close to the 'loop' end which gave me plenty of room to tighten the chuck of the drill to the other end

Once you are set up, simply run the drill. Go slow, try to keep the new roll of tape square (perpendicular) to the center. This sis not to hard really, but I didn't pay attention to one roll and it went crooked and I ended up with slanted roll

Most any type of tape would work with this method. You could also use about any wire to spool the new roll. You could even wrap the new roll by hand, But a drill is 200% faster and easier

Once you've got a good size roll, just remove it from the drill. I cut the end off flush with the roll. You are finished and you have a few much smaller rolls of strong, useful tape for backpacks, emergency kits, the car the office and anywhere else you might need to do an emergency repair

Would you like the small pictures to get larger?
Let us know, use the feedback form to request larger pictures.

It's a lot more work to load all the large pictures.
We are happy to do it if they are requested, but if not we leave them small to save time

Thanks for the idea.
I appreciate it.
